Pilates
Pilates is a revolutionary component of fitness, originally coined by its founder--Joseph Pilates (hence the name).
It was originally used as a form of rehabilitation for dancers and was discovered as a means to bridge the
gap between traditional strength training and flexibility exercises. Although it is not meant to be a
substitute to conventional forms of fitness and exercise, it is often used as a primary means for reaching goals.
Pilates exercises are generally linear in nature and therefore, limited in its scope. Pilates can be used to discover
movement abnormalities, strength deficiencies and postural balance problems, as well as complimenting a full
exercise program. Depending on the nature of the problem, we may seek assistance from BodyWorks-The Training and
Prevention Center in Durham, and will work this out with you as needed.
Pilates can offer a wonderful compliment to your workout program by helping to strengthen your 'core' musculature,
which Joseph Pilates belived was the center of strength. It's principles borrow from those of Yoga, and Tai Chi, and
encourage a mind-body connection. Through a thorough understanding of strengthing the core, your muscles can
"learn" to open more (and lengthen more) and thus enhance your flexibility, overall strength and sense of well-being.
As the perfect compliment to your workout and as a means of conditioning, Pilates should be considered an enhancement form,
and can provide the missing link to achieve yoru ultimate state of fitness!

To add to Pilates, consider Gyrokenesis and Gyrotonic. Developed by Juliu Horvath, Gyrokenesis uses some of the Pilates
principles, but its motion is spiral, rather than linear. Gyrokenesis fundamentals allow you to increase
muscular strength through 'creating space' around your spinal column--and therefore, allow you to open your muscles
further then just with Pilates. Principles can be done using a stool and mat combo, and also with Gyrotonic
Expansion System Apparatus. Ask us for details!
Pilates programs include a 'body reading' and assesment, and sessions can be purchased in small groups (3-5)
or larger groups (8 and up). Monthly deals are available, and can be arranged using billing. Ask for details!
